In 1853, Swedish importer Victor Theodor Engwall dedicated his life to searching the world for coffee varieties that had yet to be discovered. As a coffee merchant with a rare devotion to his craft and a personal penchant for fine coffee, he combined different beans, roasted and ground them in various ways, then brewed and tasted endless options until he developed a distinctively perfect coffee, which was named Gevalia.
Coffee became a Swedish national passion and was as important to them as wine is to the French or tea is to the English. King Gustav of Sweden was so taken by the smooth, full-bodied taste of Gevalia that he appointed it the official coffee of the Royal Court of Sweden. This is a privilege we continue to hold and an honor everyone at Gevalia strives to maintain.
Mr. Engwall’s sons and grandsons carried on this devotion to high quality coffee. To this day, Gevalia is brewed by experts in the most critical part of making good coffee, blending and roasting. As a great sommelier might test the uniform taste and body of a fine wine, our exclusive Master Taster does the same for Gevalia coffees, weighing aroma, flavor, body and texture until the perfect balance is achieved. This dedication and attention to detail makes Gevalia not only one of the best-loved coffees in Sweden, but throughout the world.
